Italian festivals are frequently located in historic city centres or coastal sites with severely restricted vehicle access. The Zona a Traffico Limitato (ZTL) is active in virtually every Italian old town — electronic cameras capture every unauthorised vehicle, and fines range from EUR 80–300 per violation. For festival transfers, we apply for ZTL special permits in advance through the respective municipal administration. Shuttle routes start at Roma Fiumicino or Milano Malpensa and run via Autostrada connections to festival sites. For the Amalfi Coast and Ravello Festival, we exclusively use minibuses, as the SS163 Amalfitana is closed to vehicles exceeding 10.36 m in length.

For coastal festivals like Ravello, we coordinate with local police to temporarily open access roads for equipment transport.

Each municipality manages its own zone independently, permits must often be requested via PEC (Posta Elettronica Certificata), and processing times range from 5–15 business days. In Perugia, the entire hilltop old town is accessible to pedestrians only via lifts and escalators — buses park at the base of the hill at Piazza Partigiani. Summer heat in central and southern Italy (35–42 °C from June to August) demands climate-controlled cargo holds for instruments: wood warps, strings go out of tune, and lacquer can blister under direct sunlight. For the Ravello Festival, access via the SS163 is only possible in vehicles up to 8 m in length; larger ensembles are split across two to three minibuses. Parking at festival sites is extremely limited — drop-off and pickup operate within tight time windows.

No, Perugia's hilltop old town is not accessible to coaches. Buses use the large car park at Piazza Partigiani at the foot of the hill. From there, musicians reach the old town via the Minimetrò (automated funicular) or the Rocca Paolina escalators in approximately 8 minutes. Equipment is transported to the stage via a separate access route with a special permit using smaller vans — we coordinate this permit with the festival office.

How do we protect instruments at 40 °C during transfer?

All our vehicles for summer transfers in Italy feature climate-controlled cargo holds maintained at 18–22 °C. During extended standby periods (e.g., during a concert at the Arena di Verona), the vehicle is parked in shade with the air conditioning running on standby. For particularly sensitive instruments such as historic string instruments, we additionally recommend insulated transport cases with hygrometer monitoring.

Are there loading zones at Italian festival venues?

Most major festivals have designated loading zones, but access is strictly regulated. The Arena di Verona permits vehicles via Via Dietro Anfiteatro with prior registration at the production office — time slots are typically 08:00–12:00 on the concert day. At the Ravello Festival, unloading takes place on a small square below Villa Rufolo; from there, equipment is carried by hand up stairs to the stage. We provide local stagehands for the transport when needed.
